Charge is a team empowered to embrace digitization and optimize how American Electric Power (AEP) does business. 

“With the help of technology and a healthy dose of curiosity, we’re ready to discover ideas that will revolutionize the ways AEP provides energy,” is Charge’s core purpose.

This research and development arm of AEP works in the 80 on the Commons development in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Architectural design was provided by Mode Architects.

Charge’s whole space is built around collaboration, accomplished in a variety of ways with audio-visual technology and the necessary low-voltage cabling infrastructure:

• A large, 135-inch diagonal video wall at the entrance is used as digital signage and can also be used for meetings and presentations. This display is visible both inside the facility and also from the building’s common outdoor patio on the 6th floor used by residents and other business tenants, so it functions as advertising to showcase their work and mission to visitors and to others in the building.

• About 20 column-mounted displays are situated among groups of workstations, showing tasks, stats, and projects each team is working on.

• A presentation area with tiered seating contains microphones, speakers, and a retractable projection screen for presentations, with touchscreen control for easy operation.

• Two traditional conference rooms are equipped with dual displays, video and audio conferencing, wired and wireless presentation capability, and a touchscreen for easy control of the AV system.

• A small huddle space contains a basic display and wireless presentation device for impromptu meetings.

• Room scheduling panels for each meeting area allow for efficient use of these shared resources.

• A multi-zone sound masking system is provided to maintain concentration and privacy in the open-office environment.
